I strictly work virtually from San Ramon CA and do not travel, but help companies and standards groups internationally almost weekly.
Question: What is best system to improve my home indoor air quality?
Answer: no simple answer, and need to consider your needs and whether you own home, have central HVAC system with recirculation etc.
ASHRAE, American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning is now recommend you should try to use at least MERV 13 rating filter. I have still better MERV 16 filter for my home, but need a more powerful fan for this. If you rent or have no control of your HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), you can also buy a HEPA filter unit for the room where you spend the most time. Consumer reports does periodic reports objectively evaluating stand alone room air purifiers. Your local library has copies if you do not subscribe.
For my home HVAC, I have 5 inch deep filter box that allows MERV 16 to be used. I also installed UVC light in duct shining on upstream surface of filter to inactivate any trapped pathogens. Note that the UV light does lead to cracking of upstream Lenox polymer filter pleats in a little over 6 months, although the filtration stays excellent for months longer. I do monitor my air CO2 concentration with a CO2Meter.com CO2 NDIR meter and try to get more fresh air if CO2 is >800ppmv. I also have www.purpleair.com particle counter in home that shows excellent air quality for particles, equivalent of ISO 6 cleanroom, and AQI = Air Quality Index often 0-1 if windows are closed and air is recirculating. Specific homes might need other considerations like C filters for ozone and heavier organics removal. If humid locations, dehumidifiers might be helpful to reduce mold/fungi/biofouling.
After 34 years in the Semiconductor and analytical chemistry, cleanroom industries, I left and founded Camenzind Solutions to consult with startups, labs, fabs, VCs, other companies on above topics and also now business development. I have a passion to help others with chemistry, diagnostics, contamination control, nanotech, IAQ (Indoor Air Quality), greener technologies.
My goal is to help you, your company become more successful faster. I can help you avoid technical mistakes made by hundreds of other companies I have helped, or assess new technologies that can get you to market more rapidly. When it comes to client selection, I am choosy. I want to give each of you the time and guidance you deserve. I can work on hourly, daily or other basis including a retainer. I would love to participate on Science Advisory Boards, contribute to focus groups. I do participate also in angel groups incl Chemical Angel Network, MIT Alumni Angel/VC groups, Bio2DeviceGroup, ACS Small Chemical Business Division. When I am not the best contact, can provide you often also with other experts that can help.
